Call for Abstracts -- GEMS Fall Meeting

The Genetics and Environmental Mutagenesis Society (GEMS, http://www.gems-nc.org) is soliciting abstracts for presentations (poster or a short talk) at our fall meeting to be held at the Friday Center, University of North Carolina, Durham, NC on November 8, 2011. The theme of the meeting is "Oxidative stress - role of metals and metalloids in cancer". Please submit abstracts of your original research in genetics and/or environmental mutagenesis by no later than 12:00 AM Saturday October 15, 2011.

Four to six abstracts will be selected for short-talks (15 minutes including questions/discussion). Awards will be presented for the best short-talk and best posters (by category) as selected by our judges. Award amounts will be announced soon, and they will be similar to those presented at our past meetings, which are available on our Awards web page (see link above).

Abstracts, which do not have to be directly related to the meeting theme, should follow the instructions provided in the GEMS abstract template (SEE BELOW). You may send your completed abstract (as a MS-Word document) in an email attachment to the Program Chair at the following address: keshava.nagu@epa.gov or ward.william@epa.gov.  Please include "GEMS Abstract" in the subject line, and in the body of your message specify whether you are a student, technician, or post-doctoral student. Also indicate your preference for presenting a poster or short-talk.

Registration for the meeting is required, and that information will be provided in a forthcoming  announcement.

Call for Nominations to Board of Directors

GEMS has provided a forum for regional scientists to discuss cutting-edge topics in environmental mutagenesis since 1982 by organizing two popular and successful meetings for its members each year.  Now is your opportunity to directly participate in the process of creating and organizing GEMS meetings.

The GEMS Board of Directors is seeking nominations for President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and three councilor positions:

President-Elect (1-year term; transitions to President in 2nd year)

Councilor (3-year term; GEMS has a total of 9 Councilors whose terms overlap in 1-year blocks of three Councilors)

Secretary (2-year term)

Treasurer (2-year term)

Nominate a colleague or yourself for one of the above GEMS positions to promote regional scientific discussion of exciting new research and salient issues that impact genetic and environmental mutagenesis!  Nominees will be contacted to confirm their participation and will be asked to submit a short bio for the election.

Elections will take place in September.  Positions commence at our 2011 Fall Meeting that will be held at the UNC Friday Center on November 8th (details to follow).
